Good morning.
I’m writing to thank you all for following along to my first try at a “season” of newsletters. The first season has now concluded and I appreciate everyone who read even a single installment of this season, anyone who liked a post, and anyone who sent over a kind note.
These essays were probably more than a little long. These essays were probably more than a little self-indulgent and navel-gazing. But life is short and they were things I felt like I needed to write my way through and share. Why? I have no idea, but I have no idea why I write in the first place other than to feel less alone and to make some attempt at connecting with the larger world around me—even if that is often through mundane personal experiences, pieces of pop culture, and stories that are very small in scope.
My day job is spent figuring out what audiences like and enjoy and how to give them more of what they want in the places and formats they’ll most likely enjoy the things they want to read and watch and listen to. In some way, then, it seems only fitting that I have no idea how to apply that skill to my own personal life and endeavors. Most likely that’s because I’m either too vain or too lazy—it's probably a mixture of both. But while I’m alive (and have a Substack/Substack or some platform like it exists) I’ll keep writing what I feel is important to me and sharing it to whoever won’t scream at me. And I’ll keep writing stories and submitting them to anyone who might give them a chance.
I’ll probably be back for another “season” in a few months. Most likely it will be different in approach (and installment length, I think) than this one. In the meantime, I’ll stay out of your inboxes and return to work revising the current novel manuscript I’ve been working on since the end of 2019 in the hopes of finding it a home with an agent somewhere.
Thanks again for indulging me and this season of newsletters. If you haven’t read any of them, are making your way through them, or if you’ve read any of them at all, no matter what, your feedback and thoughts are welcome and appreciated.
I’ve been trying to get better at writing, in earnest, for the last twenty years or so. As you can see, I still have a long way to go. So, if you feel inclined to help me at all by offering your two cents, again, I’d greatly appreciate it.
Until the next time: Thank you, take care of yourself, and be good to yourself and the people in your life.
